Scorpio, from ancient Greek Scorpios, governs the period from about October 23 and November 21, and it is a water sign. Ancient astrologers believed that Scorpio was ruled by Mars, while modern Astrologers deem Pluto to be the primary ruler.

According to Greek mythology, Artemis and her mother Leto sent Scorpios out to kill Orion, after he boasted about killing every animal on Earth. The scorpion stung and killed the mighty hunter. To commemorate their battle, Zeus raised both combatants to the sky. This is said to be why Orion sets as Scorpios rises in the sky.
