Virgo, from the original Greek word Parthenos, which means virgin, governs the period from about August 23 and September 22. It is an Earth sign, and it is ruled by Mercury.

In Greek mythology, the constellation is related to Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the harvest goddess. After Persephone’s kidnapping, Demeter abandoned her role as an Earth goddess. The world’s fruitfulness and fertility suffered, and Zeus insisted that Pluton return Persephone to her mother. Pluton agreed, but before allowing Persephone to return, he bound her to the Underworld by feeding her six pomegranate seeds (the sacred fruit of the Underworld). This enabled Persephone to spend six months in the Underworld and six months on Earth with her mother. To this day, in the Northern Hemisphere, Virgo’s return to the night sky happens in the months of April and May, the beginning of the spring season, when Persephone reunites with Demeter.
